Program Objective

The mission of the Religious Education Program of St. Peter Parish is to assist parents in the religious, moral, and spiritual formation of their children. Parents are the primary educators of their children, teaching by word and example. Our parish catechists support the parents and students by providing quality religious education, faith formation, and sacramental preparation in a nurturing, faith-filled environment. Through the cooperative effort of parents, catechists, and students, our children will grow in their love for God and knowledge of their Catholic faith.

Our parish will help our students develop their God-given gifts and talents and live as proud and contributing members of St. Peter Parish and the wider Catholic community of the Diocese of Burlington.

Format

The Religious Education Program at St. Peter Church will be a multi-age focused program of in-class instruction and activities, in-home instruction, and liturgical involvement through special masses and prayer services throughout the year. Students will be grouped according the the Sacraments they have received or are preparing for [Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist]. Older students will take an active role by working collaboratively on occasion with teachers to both learn themselves and to communicate the faith to our younger students. Our program is not intended to be only a sacramental preparation program, but a collaborative and community based learning experience where children, adolescents, and adults work together to deepen their faith and understanging of what it meants to be a Catholic Christian

The program will be designed to operate on a twice a month schedule, on Sunday mornings prior to the 11:00 AM Mass. Classes would be approximately forty-five minutes, beginning at 10:00 AM and ending at 10:45 AM and will be located in St. Peter’s Friary. Class experiences will be interactive and hands on, using the major seasons of the liturgical year to create direct connections between our knowledge of the faith and our participation in the worship of the parish. We will also work to integrate community service activities in the local community so students can make a direct connection between our faith and service to those in need. In other words, we will not only learn about the faith, but learn to live the faith!

The “academic”goal of the program is to set clear objectives that the students in the program can master by the time the program would finish for the summer in May. Focusing on learning objectives, rather than simply a number of classes attended, gives flexibility to families in the event that they must miss a Sunday class period. Suggested in home activities will reinforce these learning objectives for the weekends that do not have a Sunday class. All activities and lessons in the program will be directly linked and supported by weekly participation in the Sunday/Saturday Mass.

Programs Offered

Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, we will be offering the following sections for Religious Education:

General Faith Formation: This program is designed for students not in active sacramental preparation for First Penance, First Holy Communion, or Confirmation. Students learn about their faith through bible stories, games, music, crafts, and liturgical involvement. Basic prayers, Catholic moral teachings, Lives of Saints and Holy Days and Seasons are highlighted. Students in may begin taking this class in Pre-K, and in any other years where they are not registered for sacramental preparation. Active pariticpation as a family at Saturday or Sunday Mass is a requirement for this class.

First Penance Preparation Program [Grade 1]:

At St. Peter s, children (who are baptized) begin their preparation for First Penance and First Holy Communion in the first grade and receive their sacraments in the second grade. Students who have not received Holy Communion by the second grade will be placed in an appropriate sacramental class to accomodate their preparation needs based on their age. We are excited to begin a new First Penance preparation program this fall of 2018! St. Peters has decided to use Blessed by Dynamic Catholic. Active pariticpation as a family at Saturday or Sunday Mass and class attendance is a requirement for sacramental reception.

First Holy Communion Preparation Program [Grade 2]:

At St. Peter s, children (who are baptized) begin their preparation for First Holy Communion in the second grade and receive First Penance first and First Holy Communion in May of their second grade year. Students who have not received Holy Communion by the second grade will be placed in an appropriate sacramental class to accomodate their preparation needs based on their age. We are excited to begin a new First Communion preparation program this fall of 2018! St. Peter's has decided to use "Blessed" by Dynamic Catholic. Active pariticpation as a family at Saturday or Sunday Mass and class attendance is a requirement for sacramental reception.

Confirmation Preparation Program [Grades 8-10]:

At St. Peter Church, children (who have received their First Penance and First Communion) will begin their preparation for Confirmation in the 8th and 9th grades for the 2018-2019 academic year. In addition, change is in the works for the timing of the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Diocese of Burlington. Bishop Coyne has directed that by the 2021-2022 school year youth in the sixth grade will receive the sacrament, after a gradual lowering of the age at which it is received.

The age of reception for Confirmation will be; 2018-2019,10th grade; 2019-2020, 8th, 9th and 10th grade; 2020- 2021, 7th and 8th grade; 2021-2022, 6th and 7th grade; 2022-2023, 6th grade.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, St. Peter's will prepare students in grades 8-10 for the Sacrament of Confirmation to help align with the directives of the Bishop. We are excited to begin a new Confirmation preparation program this fall of 2018! St. Peter's has decided to use "Blessed" by Dynamic Catholic. The Diocese is working on a new focused Confirmation curriculum that parishes can use in future years, situated within the broader religious education program. The new Confirmation curriculum will be designed for 6th grade students, but will have clear instructions on how to adapt it to older students as we go through this transition from 10th to 6th grades.

Active pariticpation as a family at Saturday or Sunday Mass and class attendance is a requirement for sacramental reception.

Parent Involvement

As parents, you are the primary educators of your children, teaching them by word and example. Family support and cooperation are essential to the religious formation of your children. Regular Mass attendance as a family and a genuine interest in your child s progress serve as great sources of support and encouragement.

Sharing your own faith, assisting your child in learning Catholic prayers, and discussing class sessions and doing take home activities with your child will help to deepen their faith formation experience and strengthen your church/family relationship. We also strongly encourage all families to register as St. Peter parishoners to help us keep you informed of events and to help with communication. Registration information is included on the back of the 2018- 2019 Religious Education form and can be submitted as one document.

We are always in need of teachers/facilitators/volunteers for our program, so anyone who is interested in being part of the program is asked to please contact the parish office or email Michael Audette at  DRE@stpeterrutland.org and he will provide you with the necessary information and requirements. Our children are the future of our parish, and we invite you be part of helping them grow in their Catholic faith!
